around the globe are mourni of former south a >> this is kpix5 news. >> remembering a world leader. tonight, people around the globe are mourning the loss of nelson mandela. and washington dc, people gathered with candles outside the embassy where a statue of mandela stands. >> it is now morning in south africa. some people have been paying tribute outside his home since his death was announced late thursday night. others are just waking up the to the news there. mandela is credited with transforming a country. >> tonight, danielle nottingham has more on the passing of this great leader. >> reporter: south africans gathered in the predawn darkness to sing the praises of

their former president, nelson mandela who died just hours earlier at the age of 95. >> our nation has lost its greatest son. our people have lost a father. >> reporter: after 27 years in prison for crimes against the government, mandela was freed in 1990. in 1994, he became the country's first black president. >> he built a genuine multiracial democracy in south africa. when he could have had a one party state and shut everyone else out. when he could have had the politics of resentment, he chose the politics of inclusion. >> reporter: years later, he became friends with america's first black president. >> we lost one of the world east most influential and profoundly good people of this

earth. >> reporter: president obama will attend the funeral which is expected to be held in about ten days. after the united nations, the security council stood for a moment of silence. >> let us continue each day to be inspired by nelson mandela's lifelong example to keep walking for a better world. >> reporter: a tribute to a man who really did change the world. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. >> president obama has ordered flags to fly at half staff through monday in honor of nelson mandela. four months after he was released from prison, nelson mandela visited the u.s. more than 70,000 people packed the oakland coliseum to see him. as christin ayers explains, it was the east bay who led this movement that earned the bay area its visit. >> reporter: a lone rose left as the monument.

>> it is you. the people of oakland, the people of the bay area who have given me and my delegation strength and hope to go back and continue the struggle. >> reporter: it was no accident that nelson mandela made oakland the final stop on his 1990 u.s. freedom tour. the east bay was really a center of a lot of the efforts to try to change the south african regime and get rid of apartide. seven years later the city of berkeley became the first in the nation to divest from south africa. assemblywoman nancy skinner was part of that movement forcing the campus to cut ties with corporations linked with the

attartide regime. nelson mandela's visit here four years later was particularly emotional for the east bay. skinner says south africa's hard fought victory was one the east bay shared. >> it was so thrill tag we americans, that we east bay residents could have been something with that kind of global impact. >> reporter: in oakland, christin ayers, kpix5. former san francisco mayor willy brown served as the host when nelson mandela made that bay area visit back in 1990. >> president kennedy was assassinated for his brother, bobby, martin luther king jr. , or, any of the other great people whom we have honored appropriately by virtual of their contributions. my guess is each one of them at this moment are welcoming in the real leader, nelson mandela. >> yeah, you heard it there.

ice cream sales have not dipped very much surprisingly. more news, a 3.8 earthquake hit east of santa rosa at about 10:44. no reports of any damage. it is a murder that haunted bay area investigators for 20 years. tonight, there is a game changing break in the case. using familial dna and this moldova woman known only as pogonip jane, they have finally confirmed her identity. they say she is kori joanne lamaster of pacifica, she was 17 when she disappeared back in 1993. her body was found by hikers in 1994. tonight, joe vasquez learned more about the girl who disappeared so many years ago. >> reporter: it was horrible to hear what wound up happening to her. that she has been dead for that long. >> reporter: robert hanson of pacifica says he was surprised that kori joanne lamaster, the

girl he used to babysit as a teenager was the remains found. she lived here in pacifica with her parents. they had adopted her from a relative. she was a chronic run away it was a traumatic ordeal for the family. kori ran away a few days, spent the night in homeless shelters, came back and ran away again. >> you know how come kids when they go through teenage years have difficult times an kori was one of those teenagers who just didn't adjust or fit in real well. >> reporter: kori's body was found in santa cruz in 1994. they don't know why they didn't report her missing until 1997. >> like i said, i know she ran away. maybe the last time she ran away, they didn't report her. but i know they had reported her before. >> reporter: so the big

question is who killed kori joanne lamaster 20 years ago? a father and a son, greg and wayne white are persons of interest. the father is dead, the son is still alive in tennessee. live in the news room, joe vasquez, kpix5. >> the case was originally investigated by lauren butch baker. he was one of two santa cruz police officers gunned down on the job in february of this year. he had been the lead investigator on the case in the 1990s . today's announcement is a big win for the department, and also for their fallen friend. a brazen burglar who was caught on camera rummaging through a fremont hole is tonight behind bars. 28-year-old richard andres m hah nuelos was arrested almost immediately after they saw the surveillance video. you can see a guy digging through personal belongings. he was caught in the act over the weekend by surveillance videos. police received dozens of tips that led them right to the

suspect. police in hercules is looking for a man who they think is a serial burglar. most of them are happening in an area called the birds. a door is pried open. the proximity of the break ins has led police to think they are all connected. it has been months since businesses were damaged in oakland in the zimmerman protest. we spoke to neighbors who said it has been long enough. >> it just looks like it is out of business. >> reporter: no store wants to give a negative impression. >> it is brown and ugly. >> reporter: but that is the impression people are walking away with. >> it is an eyesore. >> reporter: building inspectors in october sited this downtown oakland sears for blight. it is all because of the

boarded up windows. protesters broke them back in july. but five months later, sears still hasn't replaced them. neighbors and business owners say it is not the better way, but a bad way to do business. >> like they could care less about the city of oakland. just come and spend your money, but we don't really care. >> reporter: tina johnson runs a restaurant nearby. she is sympathetic to what they experienced. violent protesters smashed its windows every time. some suspect the retailer gave up on replacing them. >> they should make a decision if they want to continue to do business in oakland. if sew, they need to clean it up. >> reporter: sars has no plans to release it. they say replaceing the twin does is more complicated than those in a typical building but
